Flu season is upon us and experts are saying this year will be a bad one. Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu, but if you didn’t get vaccinated and you end up with the virus there are some things you can do to treat the symptoms. In addition to taking any medications your doctor prescribes, you can also help yourself feel better by doing the following:

■ Getting plenty of rest
■ Drinking clear fluids such as water, broth, sports drinks or electrolyte beverages to prevent becoming dehydrated
■ Placing a cool, damp washcloth on your forehead, arms and legs to reduce discomfort associated with a fever
■ Putting a humidifier in your room to make breathing easier
■ Gargling warm salt water to soothe a sore throat
■ Covering up with a warm blanket to help calm chills
